Why earn an associate degree?

A degree in massage therapy shows prospective employers that you have potential to move ahead in the field. When you complete our program in massage therapy, you will have a thorough grounding in a variety of massage techniques and modalities. In addition, you will complete general education courses that strengthen communication, analysis and presentation skills. You will also take a course in business communications as well as specialized classes in sports massage and crainiosacral therapy.

Core requirements in the associate degree program

In addition to general education credits, students complete core requirements that focus on topics such as the following:

  • Kinesiology
  • Exercise Physiology
  • Swedish Massage
  • Pregnancy/Special Populations Massage
  • Myofascial Release
  • Hot Stone Massage
  • Deep Tissue Trigger Point Massage
  • Thai/Energy Work

They also complete externships that allow them to practice their techniques and work with real clients. When they complete the program, they will be prepared for jobs in a variety of settings using many different techniques, making them valuable employees or owners of their own massage businesses.

Certification – the next step

As a graduate, you will be prepared to sit for national certification exams and licenses, including the NCETM certification exam offered by the National Certification Board of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork. You can also take the MBLEx licensing exam offered by the Federation of States Massage Therapy Board (FSMTB). You will be eligible for membership in a variety of professional organizations. Sitting for these exams and earning certifications indicates your commitment to the field of massage therapy.
