Career opportunities for medical assistants

Our associate degree prepares students for positions in hospitals, clinics, physician offices and other medical settings. The job prospects are bright, with the Bureau of Labor Statistics projecting that medical assistant will be one of the fastest growing careers in the next few years. Medical assistants with associate degrees will be most likely to benefit from this growth.

Medical assistants may perform duties such as the following:

  • Recording vital signs and taking medical histories
  • Preparing patients for examinations
  • Assisting physicians during exams
  • Collecting and preparing lab specimens
  • Performing basic lab tests
  • Taking X-rays and performing other radiographic procedures
  • Instructing patients about treatment, diet and medications
  • Administering injections

Depending on the clinic, they may also authorize prescription refills, remove stitches and change dressings.

Certification for medical assistants with associate degrees

Graduates will be prepared to take certification exams in radiology and medical assisting. These exams are administered by the following organizations:

  • American Registry of Radiographic Technicians (ARRT)
  • Certifying Board of the American Association of Medical Assistants, Certified Medical Assistant—CMA (AAMA)

They lead to credentials that employers value. Medical assistants with these certifications can look forward to good career opportunities and salary levels.
